Road Safety Week 2024

Over 1,700 people lose their lives on UK roads every year, with another 30,000 sustaining life-changing injuries. But these figures aren’t just numbers; each crash represents a personal tragedy, a life forever altered, and families left to deal with the aftermath. As part of our commitment to Brake’s Road Safety Week campaign, we’re taking a moment to highlight the steps we’re taking—and what everyone can do—to improve road safety, both on and off the worksite.

Machinery Safety

One of the primary ways we contribute to safer roads is by ensuring that our machinery meets the highest safety standards. All our road sweepers are equipped with banksman systems, which alert drivers to potential hazards and give them ample time to react. Additionally, we’ve installed proximity lighting on our sweepers; if any road user comes within six metres, sensors automatically shut down the machine, significantly reducing the risk of accidents for anyone nearby. Many of our vehicles are also fitted with audible turn alerts, and we’re in the process of adding extra signage and reflective stickers to increase visibility and awareness for surrounding road users.

Skilled and Safety-Focused Operatives

Our experienced operatives receive regular, up-to-date training that includes both practical and online sessions. All team members complete the FORS Gold & Silver eLearning curriculum, ensuring they stay informed on the latest safety practices. In addition, every driver has completed LoCITY training, which emphasises eco-friendly driving techniques, avoiding vehicle overloads, checking tyre pressures, and proper use of AdBlue to reduce emissions. This training not only helps the environment but also encourages careful, attentive driving practices that help make roads safer for everyone.

What We Can All Do to Improve Road Safety

While we’re committed to making our operations as safe as possible, road safety is a shared responsibility. Simple actions, such as staying aware of machinery, giving extra space to vehicles, and following all traffic rules, can make a big difference. Road Safety Week is an important reminder that we all play a part in reducing accidents, saving lives, and making our roads safer.

Together, by making informed, careful choices, we can help protect lives and build a safer future for everyone on our roads.
